Abstract
Violence against women poses a significant challenge to social justice, human rights and sustainable development in both developed and developing countries. This study examines domestic violence against women in Bangladesh evaluating the local environment within a larger global framework. The paper explores the conceptual foundation of domestic violence, its various forms and underlying causes, as well as the link between socioeconomic level and the prevalence of abuse. It also analyses the corresponding frequency of various forms of domestic violence and provides a description of domestic violence in Bangladesh, including its historical context and the role of women’s movements and legislative interventions. Furthermore, the study examines the scope of domestic violence at both national and global levels, as well as worldwide developments and responses to gender-based violence. The study adopts a qualitative and descriptive research approach based on an extensive review of secondary sources, including national surveys, international reports, and existing academic literature. The report takes a comparative and analytical approach, highlighting key similarities and contrasts between Bangladesh and the global situation. Finally, the paper addresses the social, economic, and developmental consequences of reducing domestic violence, highlighting the need of policy reform, societal awareness, and institutional strengthening in addressing violence against women in Bangladesh and throughout the world.
